Give Me Back My Wig
Last Minute Blues
This Southland band delivers classic blues with biscuits and gravy on the side as the songs of Slim Harpo, Tampa Red, Willie Dixion, Elmore James and others give them cause for celebration. Singer Kara Turner belts'em out strong while the band turns passion on a dime. Guitarist Joe Campbell, who sings the lead vocal part on "Let Me Love You, Baby" bassist Bill Hayes, drummer Glen Maiden and tenor saxophonist Glenn Stacey issue the blues with a knowing ear. Turner is at her best with gritty moans, such as "Texas Flood" and Bruce Springsteen's "Fire", where she expresses each message with dynamite in her voice. There's no turning away from her projection when the music starts to boil. Campbell's guitar loads the session with a welcome dose of caffeine, saxophonist Stacey adds color in places, and the tandem of Hayes and Maiden fill the floorboards with foot-tappin rhythms.
Multi-tracking serves the band in a few spots, allowing for an even bigger sound, but it's their pure quartet quality that brings the best portrait. With Willie Dixon's "Let Me Love You, Baby" standing out as the album's high point, the band honors tradition with the spirit of blues ancestors everywhere.
